Tackling Energy Poverty

Freeplay Weza - The foot powered portable generator

Our first-generation foot-powered energy source, the Freeplay Weza – which means ‘power’ in Swahili – provided up to 12 volts of power for charging cell phones, lights, and other low energy devices.

We will use this technology as a launching platform for our lighting efforts in Africa. Because it is portable, easy to use, and sustainable, the Weza technology can be transferred to income-generation projects that supply clean energy to communities without electricity.

Weza and lighting technology enterprises will benefit rural communities through:

  • Powering lights that increase productivity, and improve security, safety and health.
  • Providing employment and income generation opportunities.
  • Building business and micro-finance skills.
  • Reducing reliance on unsafe, polluting energy.
  • Introducing new rural services, such as hairdressing.
  • Improving communications.
